Best Airport to Fly Into Morocco from the US and Canada
For most travelers frBest Airport to Fly Into Morocco from the US and Canada
For most travelers from the US and Canada, the best airport to fly into Morocco is Casablanca Mohammed V International Airport (CMN), because it has the most nonstop flights from North America. If your trip focuses on Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert, Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) is often the better arrival point, especially now that it has seasonal nonstop flights from New York/Newark, Atlanta and Montreal.
This guide compares Morocco’s main international airports, lists the nonstop routes from North America, and explains how to choose your arrival and departure airports so your private itinerary starts and ends in the right place.
Which airport is best for flying into Morocco?
The right airport depends on where your itinerary begins. All four airports below are run by ONDA, Morocco’s national airports authority. Here is the short version:
| Airport | Code | Best for | Nonstop from North America? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casablanca Mohammed V | CMN | Most US and Canadian travelers; tours starting with Rabat, Fes or the imperial cities | Yes, several cities |
| Marrakech Menara | RAK | Trips centered on Marrakech, the High Atlas, Aït Benhaddou and the Sahara | Yes, limited and partly seasonal |
| Fes Saïss | FEZ | Starting in Fes or the north, then heading to Merzouga | No, connect in Europe or Casablanca |
| Tangier Ibn Battouta | TNG | Starting in the north: Tangier, Chefchaouen, Fes | No, connect in Europe or Casablanca |
If you can find a good nonstop to Marrakech, take it. If not, Casablanca is the most reliable gateway, and Marrakech is about a 2.5 to 3-hour drive away by motorway . Many travelers combine the two with a private tour from Casablanca to Marrakech.
Casablanca (CMN): the main gateway from North America

Casablanca Mohammed V is Morocco’s largest airport and the hub of Royal Air Maroc, the national airline. It has the widest choice of nonstop flights from the US and Canada and the most connections to the rest of Morocco.
Nonstop routes to Casablanca (late 2026):
- Royal Air Maroc: New York (JFK), Washington Dulles (IAD), Miami (MIA), Los Angeles (LAX), Montreal (YUL) and Toronto (YYZ)
- Air Canada: Montreal (YUL)
Los Angeles is the newest route: Royal Air Maroc started nonstop LAX–Casablanca service in June 2026, about three times a week on a Boeing 787 . It is the first nonstop link between Africa and the US West Coast, which saves West Coast travelers a connection in New York or Europe.
Why Casablanca works well:
- More flight options and dates, which helps when you have fixed vacation days.
- Easy start for a loop through Rabat, Chefchaouen, Fes, the Sahara and Marrakech. See our private multi-day tours from Casablanca.
- Good onward connections if you prefer to fly domestically.
What to know: The airport is about 1 hour from central Casablanca. Many travelers spend only a short time in the city (our Casablanca travel guide covers what is worth seeing) before heading out. With a private driver in Morocco waiting at arrivals, you can go straight to Rabat (about 1 hours) or Marrakech after a long overnight flight, without dealing with taxis or train transfers.
Marrakech (RAK): the best airport for the south and the Sahara

Marrakech Menara is the most convenient arrival airport if your private tour focuses on Marrakech, the High Atlas Mountains, Aït Benhaddou, the Dades Valley, or the Sahara at Merzouga or Erg Chegaga. The airport sits just 15 to 20 minutes from the medina, so you can be at your riad soon after landing.
Nonstop routes to Marrakech:
- United Airlines: Newark (EWR), seasonal, mainly winter (roughly late October to spring)
- Delta Air Lines: Atlanta (ATL), about three times a week, seasonal (late October to spring)
- Air Transat: Montreal (YUL), year-round, more flights in summer than in winter
The Delta flight is useful even if you do not live in Atlanta, because it connects to many US cities through the Atlanta hub. Outside these seasons, most travelers reach Marrakech with one connection in Casablanca or a European hub.
Why Marrakech works well:
- You start where many itineraries already begin, with no long drive on day one. Browse our private multi-day tours from Marrakech.
- It is the classic starting point for private desert tours from Marrakech over the High Atlas.
- Flying home from Marrakech is easy if you end your trip there.
Fes (FEZ) and Tangier (TNG): for northern itineraries

Neither Fes nor Tangier has nonstop flights from North America, but both make sense in specific cases.
Fly into Fes if you want to begin with the medina of Fes, then cross the Middle Atlas to the Merzouga dunes and finish in Marrakech. You will usually connect through Casablanca or a European city. Fes to Merzouga is roughly a 7 to 8-hour drive with stops. Our tailor-made Fes desert tours follow this route.
Fly into Tangier if you are combining Morocco with Spain or Portugal, or want to start in the north with Tangier, Asilah and Chefchaouen. Chefchaouen is about 2 to 2.5 hours from Tangier by road. See our tailor-made Morocco tours from Tangier.
Should you book an open-jaw ticket?
Yes, for most multi-day trips an open-jaw ticket (flying into one city and home from another) is the smartest option. It saves you from driving back to your starting point at the end of the trip.
Common combinations for US and Canadian travelers:
- Into Casablanca, out of Marrakech: Casablanca → Rabat → Chefchaouen → Fes → Merzouga → Dades → Aït Benhaddou → Marrakech. This is the classic imperial cities and Sahara loop, as on our private tours from Casablanca to the Sahara Desert.
- Into Marrakech, out of Casablanca: the same route in reverse, useful if your best nonstop arrives in Marrakech.
- Into Tangier or Fes, out of Marrakech: a north-to-south route for travelers coming from Europe.
Compare the open-jaw price with a round trip before booking. On many dates the difference is small, and you gain a full day of travel time. For help choosing a trip length, read how to plan Morocco tours by duration.
How long are the flights from the US and Canada?
Nonstop flight times are shorter than many travelers expect:
- New York (JFK or EWR) to Casablanca or Marrakech: about 7 to 7.5 hours
- Montreal to Casablanca or Marrakech: about 7 hours
- Atlanta to Marrakech: about 9 hours
- Los Angeles to Casablanca: about 11 hours
Most eastbound flights leave in the evening and land in Morocco the next morning. Plan an easy first day: a short drive, a check-in at your riad and a relaxed walk, not a long road day.
Practical tips for arriving in Morocco
- Entry: US and Canadian citizens currently do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Your passport should be valid for your whole stay. Check the latest rules on the US State Department’s Morocco page before you travel.
- Arrival time: Morning arrivals are ideal. If you land late, spend the first night near your arrival city rather than driving.
- Money: The Moroccan dirham is a closed currency. You can exchange money or use ATMs at the airport after customs.
- SIM cards: Local SIM cards and eSIMs are easy to get on arrival.
- Transfers: Arrange your pickup in advance. A private driver meeting you at arrivals removes the most stressful part of landing in a new country.
